Lymphedema(LE) is a diagnosis made by your doctor. Lymphedema is a backing up and building up of fluid in the tissues causing tissue and skin changes. Secondary lymphedema is caused by the removal or damage of lymph nodes. Some causes are biopsies, radiation, and surgery for cancer and non-cancer related surgeries. LE is also caused by obesity, mobility loss due to being chair bound, and paralysis. Edema related to cardiac issues generally has a better outcome if also treated by a LE therapist who can help with manual lymph drainage(MLD) and compression garments.
My training in two lymph massage modalities as well as LE certification helps me to craft a treatment plan that not only helps relieve edema, it also helps relieve pain and stress by giving soothing rhythmic massage and resetting the nervous system. Instruction in self MLD and compression garment guidance is also included in the treatment plan. Initially I may recommend Lymphatic massage weekly to bi-weekly, then every 3-4 weeks.
The benefit of having me on your LE healing team is that I can spend most of the hour focused on gentle rhythmic lymph massage in a relaxing, peaceful environment, plus I have nurse-trained eyes which makes me uniquely qualified for medically complicated and post-operative clients. I also enjoy working with reconstructive procedure plastic surgery clients as well. You will feel better at the end of the appointment than when you came in!
